Scienc Fiction Review 31b

  1. SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW 31b - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appeared on the cover of SFR 31b, edited and produced by Richard Geis.

Science Fiction Review went through two publication phases, and number 31 appears in each phase. This issue was in the later phase when Geis changed his fanzine format to a larger size, 8.5 x 11. The earlier format size was approximately 5 x 8. This issue was also the first one for which I was paid to do the cover art.

I had reached a point in time when I was being paid by professional and semi-pro markets and when Geis asked for this cover art I said I could no longer do fanzine artwork for free because I didn't think it was right for pro publishers to pay me for the same quality artwork that fanzines would be getting for free. I was a bit surprised when he offered to pay me, so I continued to do cover art for him. And from that point on most of the other fanzine editors who contacted me agreed to pay for the "printing rights" to my artwork.
